Our friends and I are a group of movie buffs and short film enthusiasts who try to make some films from the modest resources(read time) available at our disposition. We adapted my short story earlier into a short film in English and I was very satisfied with the outcome at that point. Once we ventured into the short films we were amazed by the infinite possibilities the world of short films offer. After a year of reading more books on film making techniques and sustaining the zeal to go for it again, we came out with our second film named Ameerpet: Ek Ghareeb Ka Naseeb.
This film is again written by me and directed by my best buddy Nagesh and other close friends for actors. The plot is inspired from two Kamal Haasan movies named Akali Rajyam and Pushpak and the influence can be easily seen. There is a scene in Pushpak where Kamal wants to use the rest room badly in his hostel styled residence. He stands near one of the 3 rest rooms which were occupied and sees that the other one opens. He goes and stands at a different one and the one at which he stood earlier opens only to be occupied by another quicker and probably more desperate than Kamal. This cycle repeats and he gets a chance finally but only when all three rooms become empty thereby mocking all his earlier attempts while giving what he wanted at the end without any of his efforts. This scene in the film made me want to write a short story and film it since this does not require much production budget or great histrionics.
Initially I thought this film would be a 4 minute film, but we kept adding more visuals to enhance the visual experience and to create a dramatic mood essential for a film and it ended up being 12 min. Also, this film was made with three different leads but the first two attempts were considered mediocre even by our standards so we scrapped them. Incidentally I acted in one of the versions. There is a joke in our group that the one who acts in this film would go onsite since two of us are in onsite after acting in this film.
This film does not have any dialogues since we first started it with the idea of not having any dialogues and went further with it even when it was extended to be a 12 minute film. So, it would not be difficult on viewers since there is no language involved. I was a bit apprehensive all these days to share it on channel one, but then I’m taking a chance now.
To give a background, people familiar with Ameerpet will vouch for the fact that it is an area in Hyderabad famous for coaching literally anything in the world. It would not be far from accurate to say that every graduate from Andhra Pradesh would have spent some time in that place and would look back to that experience with nostalgia. It is a place of natural smiles, helpless sarcasm, and desperate hope and most importantly of never ending dreams. Quite simply it is Malgudi of modern times and it is real.
The film can be seen here on youtube. Please watch it and let us know your views. Any and every feedback is welcome.
